Project: Avera Cancer Institute Linear Accelerator Addition
Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Role: Project Architect
Firm: BWBR
Status: Active Construction

This addition to the Avera Cancer Institute includes a new linear accelerator (linac) vault and associated office space, expanding the facility’s radiation oncology capabilities. As project architect, Brett Adams led the effort from programming through construction, including floor plan layout, exterior design, and technical coordination.

A key challenge was designing a high-performance radiation vault within a constrained footprint. Boron Block was used to achieve this, a modular radiation-shielding material. Its implementation required close coordination with the vault manufacturer, linac vendor, MEP consultants, and structural engineer to ensure shielding integrity, equipment compatibility, and constructability within site and budget constraints.

The result is a compact yet efficient treatment addition that integrates seamlessly with the original BWBR-designed facility, supporting both clinical function and patient experience.
